Here's a number that should bother every email marketer: 79% of your subscribers never see your campaigns. They're in spam, in the promotions tab, or simply scrolled past. Your open rate says 21%. That means four out of five people you paid to acquire and nurture never got the message.

Adding WhatsApp as a second channel through DMHub changes the equation. The same campaign reaches the same audience across two channels, and the combined reach jumps from 21% to 67%.

The Cross-Channel Math

Take a list of 10,000 subscribers:

Email only:

  • 2,100 open the email (21%)
  • 340 click through (3.4%)

Email + WhatsApp follow-up to non-openers:

  • 2,100 open the email (21%)
  • 7,900 didn't open the email
  • Of those, 4,800 have WhatsApp numbers (61%)
  • 4,560 read the WhatsApp message (95% of 4,800)
  • Combined reach: 6,660 (67%)
  • WhatsApp click-through: 912 (19% of 4,800)
  • Total clicks: 1,252 vs 340 (3.7x improvement)

That's a 3.7x increase in clicks from a single additional channel. The WhatsApp messages only go to people who missed the email, so there's no over-messaging.

Building a Cross-Channel Campaign

Step 1: Plan Your Content for Both Channels

Email is visual and detailed. WhatsApp is concise and conversational. The same message needs to be adapted:

| Element | Email | WhatsApp | |---------|-------|----------| | Length | 200-500 words | 50-100 words | | Images | Multiple, designed | 1 hero image max | | CTA | Button with text | Reply keyword or link | | Tone | Polished, branded | Casual, direct | | Personalization | First name, segments | First name, purchase history |

Step 2: Set Up the Workflow

  1. Send email campaign via Mailchimp
  2. Wait 24 hours
  3. DMHub identifies non-openers who have WhatsApp numbers
  4. Send adapted WhatsApp message to that segment
  5. Track both channels in a unified report

Step 3: Optimize Channel Preference

Over time, you'll learn which contacts prefer which channel. DMHub tracks:

  • Email engagement rate per contact
  • WhatsApp engagement rate per contact
  • Combined engagement score

Use this data to set channel preferences. High email engagers get email first. High WhatsApp engagers get WhatsApp first. Low engagers on both get both simultaneously.

Avoiding Cross-Channel Fatigue

Rules to prevent over-messaging:

  1. Never send the same message on both channels simultaneously. WhatsApp is always the follow-up channel for non-openers.
  2. Cap frequency at 2 WhatsApp messages per week. Even with high read rates, respect limits.
  3. Honor opt-outs per channel. A WhatsApp unsubscribe doesn't affect email, and vice versa.
  4. Track combined touchpoints. If someone got your email AND WhatsApp, count that as two touches when planning your next campaign.
